We have heard the name but what does it actually mean? Triple E, also known as Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus, is a rare disease spread by infectious mosquitos. Most people who are infected show no symptoms at all or only mild symptoms such as muscle and joint ache or a fever. However, in extreme cases, someone infected will experience brain swelling which can lead to disorientation, seizures, severe brain damage and coma. Although it’s unlikely that you would develop the extreme symptoms it’s wise to take steps toward mosquito bite prevention.
Avoiding Mosquito Bites
The best way to protect yourself from EEE or other mosquito transmitted diseases is to avoid mosquito bites. Here are a few major ways that you can reduce the risk of getting EEE.
- Drain any stagnant water: It doesn’t take much water for mosquitoes to breed. As little as a small cap can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. So just make sure that you are vigilant and remove any sitting water that could continue to accumulate such as bird baths, water bowls for your dog, buckets, or other nooks and crannies.
- Wear repellent: This seems pretty straightforward but it’s surprising how often people forget or forgo this crucial step. Wearing repellent is one of the most effective ways to keep mosquitoes away.
- Wear clothes that deter: What you wear makes a bigger difference than you may think. For one, sleeves and pants are your friend. The more of your skin that is covered the less likely you are to get bit. Mosquitos are also attracted to dark colors, so wearing lighter colored clothes can help keep the pests away as well.
