Let’s start with an easy. Everyone knows what dandelions look like. Whether they have their bright yellow heads or a cluster of fluffy white seeds, you know them when you see them. Dandelions are especially hard to deal with because their seeds travel great distances on the slightest breeze. Their roots also extend several inches into the soil, so they are difficult to completely pull up. When weeding, wiggle the plant body to loosen the roots before you pull the dandelion out of the ground.

This grassy plant becomes an eyesore when its yellowish leaves take over your lawn. And it can grow pretty much anywhere, and a single plant produces up to 150,000 seeds. To keep it from completely overtaking your lawn, weed treatment is usually the only solution. If it is growing in cracks in your sidewalk or driveway away from any other plants, you can take it out with herbicide.

Broadleaf Plantain

Broadleaf plantain plants are resilient. They are similar to dandelions and almost as common. They also easily regrow after being cut back, so you need to pull them up by the roots. The kind of soil they thrive in is dense and compacted, so lawn aeration is one way to prevent them from taking over your lawn.

Clover thrives in sunny areas and is another broadleaf plant. There are a few effective ways to get rid of clover, depending on how big the patches are and where they are in your yard. If you only have a few small patches, the easiest solution is to pull them up by hand. For bigger areas, you can deprive it of sunlight. Cover the patch with a tarp or sheet of opaque plastic and weight it down. Leave it there for a few days and then clear away the dead clover and reseed. Another solution that will take a little longer, is to set the blades of your lawnmower a little higher. The taller grass will shade the clover and prevent it from growing.
